True u-pick means walking into a growing field and cutting a pumpkin off the vine yourself. It is the version of the experience most people picture, and it is worth checking for specifically — a great many farms advertised as pumpkin patches are actually display patches, where pumpkins are trucked in and arranged on straw for photographs.

Neither is wrong, but they are different days out. If cutting from the vine matters to you, call and ask directly whether the field is still open, particularly late in October when smaller growers pick out and switch to a pile.

Bring gloves and, ideally, your own shears. Vines are prickly, and a cleanly cut stem two to four inches long keeps a pumpkin fresh far longer than one twisted off by hand.

The clearest way to tell whether a farm is running a real u-pick field: ask on the phone whether you'll be cutting from the vine yourself, not just picking from a pile. Fields get picked out unevenly through the season — the biggest, most photogenic pumpkins tend to go first on opening weekends, while late October often means smaller pumpkins spread further apart. Neither is wrong, but if you're driving any real distance, a quick call about what's currently left in the field beats a wasted trip.
